Home safety
As we age, our usual level of hearing, sight, smell, touch, and taste can fade. It is important that you are safe in your home. Here are some examples of potential hazards that could be hidden or not anticipated.
- Rug
A rug can be a tripping hazard. Make sure that it is flat and that corners are secured.
- Cables
Loose cables need to be secured and hidden away where possible.
- Clutter
Keep floors clutter-free as a preventative measure for keeping older people safe at home.
- Boxes
Try to keep hallways and the floor clear, put things away where possible.
- On the stairs
To avoid the risk of a fall, ensure that the stairs are kept free of clutter. Is there a secure handrail in place? Would a stairlift make it safer? Ensure the carpet is firmly fitted and remove any rugs.
- Kitchen
Keep knives and objects safely stored. Medication should be stored away. Avoid carrying hot water further than necessary. When not in use, turn kettles and toasters off.
Pin all important information to your refrigerator – next of kin, doctor’s details, any important phone numbers, and a list of any medication that you are currently taking.
- Bathroom
Slippery floors, awkward toilet seats, and maneuvering in and out of the bath/shower can become a risk. Make sure that the toilet is in good condition and is not loose or wobbly. Take precautions and get an in-home assessment that considers potential fall risk areas. Ask for recommendations on the appropriate tools and aids to help you, or your loved one, to safely bathe and shower.
- Bedroom
This is a common place for falls to happen, particularly when getting in and out of bed. Consider installing bed rails to get in and out of bed. Check the height of your bed, make sure the bedroom is clutter-free and well lit.
- Living Room
Make sure that furniture is steady and easy to get in and out of. Avoid tight corners for maneuvering, refrain from using door stops.
- Staying safe outdoors
Consider installing a sturdy rail at each entrance and outside light to ensure good visibility. Keep paths free of debris such as slippery leaves, loose stones, or slabs.
